Abstract

1,182,952. Aerials. NORTHROP CORP. 12 July, 1967 [13 July, 1966], No. 32043/67. Heading H4A. An aerial comprises a radiating post member 1, Fig. 1, from the end of which a top-load member 4 extends at right angles, and one or more variable capacitors C a , Cb, C c which are connected in series within the said top-load member. As described, the post member 1 is connected at its other end to a ground plane 2 and is fed from a coaxial cable, the inner conductor 5 being connected to a suitable point on the post member for impedance matching, and the outer conductor 6 being connected to the ground plane. In an embodiment which is suitable for use on an aircraft or like vehicle, two fibre-glass brackets 9, Fig. 4, carrying a fibre-glass support panel 10, are mounted on a ground plane member 2a made, for example, of aluminium honeycomb material and bonded to the metal structure of the vehicle. A generally rectangular spiral top-load member 4b of metal tubing is mounted on the upper side of the panel 10 and its inner end is bent down to form a radiating post member 1a, which is connected to the ground plane 2a. The member 4b is broken at three selected positions to accommodate metal hangers 11 carrying variable capacitors, only that designated C2 being shown in Fig. 4, for clarity. The capacitors are mounted below and as near as possible to the panel 10, and each carries a pulley 12 by means of which its capacitance may be varied. A servo-motor 17 is mounted on the ground plane 2a and is coupled via an intermediate shaft 14 to all the capacitors. A feed wire 5a from a co-axial cable connector 23 on the ground plane has a terminal lug 20 which is fastened to the post member 1a by a bolt 21. A plastics cover 24 covers the whole assembly and is attached to the edges of the ground plane 2a. The aerial is stated to be operable over a wide band of frequencies, being resonant at two or more frequencies for each combination of settings of the three tuning capacitors. By employing a reflectometer or error detection phase discriminator circuit and a servo system, the ganged capacitors may be automatically tuned to a desired frequency.
