Abstract

1,182,885. Hydrocracking; hydrotreating; lubricants. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 5 Sept.. 1968, No. 42311/68. Headings C5E and C5F. A process for the production of very high viscosity index lubricating oils comprises hydrotreating a solvent-refined, asphalt-free waxy hydrocarbon oil in the presence of a sulphided catalyst comprising a Group VI and/or Group VIII metal supported on a substantially non-acidic refractory cracking base at a temperature in the range of from 400‹ to 460‹ C., a pressure of from 165 to 225 kg/cm.<SP>2</SP> and a weight hourly space velocity of from 0À25 to 2-25 kg. of the said oil per litre of catalyst per hour and recovering a dewaxed lubricating oil having a V.I. of at least 125 and a viscosity at 210‹ F. of at least 9 centistokes from the hydrotreated waxy oil by means of fractionation and dewaxing. A product of one embodiment of the process is an oil meeting 10W/30 requirements without additives. The starting material may be a distillate, reduced or tapped crude or residuum; it may be extracted with furfural, liquid SO 2 , phenol, cresol or chlorex; it may be deasphalted with ethane, propane, butane or pentane or mixtures of these with each other or with methanol or isopropanol. The catalyst may comprise Mo, W, Co, Ni, or Pt, present as metal, sulphide or oxide on alumina which may contain alkali or alkaline earth metals but not more than 5% of silica. Lubricating compositions may comprise the oil produced by the invention, plus isobutylene polymers, polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, metal sulphonates, metal phenates, metal naphthenates, polyethylene glycol substituted polymethacrylates, zinc dithiophosphates, alkylated phenols and amine-derived succinic anhydrides.
