Abstract

1,182,816. Power-assisted steering mechanism DSO " BALKANCAR " 13 June, 1967, No. 27338/67. Heading B7H. In electromechanically.assisted steering mechanism for an electrically-propelled vehicle including contra-rotating multi-plate friction clutches 10, 11 disposed coaxially of a steering shaft, engagement of the clutches 10, 11 is effected by an axially-displaceable control sleeve 13 which is coupled at one end to an input portion 14 of the steering shaft by a multi-start thread and connected at the other end to an output portion 15 of the steering shaft by splines. The input portion 14 of the shaft is connected to a steering wheel and the output portion 15 is connected to a steering gear-box linked to the steerable wheels. The driven plates of the clutches 10, 11 are splined to the sleeve 13 and are normally separated by frusto-conical spring members 12 or coil springs from driving plates splined to drums 8, 9 which are oppositely rotated through two stage reduction gearing and an overload clutch 2 by an electric motor 1 fed from the power supply or batteries of the vehicle When the driving portion 14 of the steering shaft is rotated by the steering wheel the sleeve 13 moves axially so that a flange 13a thereon engages one clutch 10, 11 wholly or partially depending on the resistance offered by the steerable wheels and the strength of the clutch springs 12. A nut 18 in threaded engagement with the driving part 14 of the steering shaft carries a protuberance which co-operates with limit switches to deenergize the motor 1 when the steerable wheels reach extreme lock in either direction.
