Abstract

[Also in Division E2] In a press for moulding expanded polystyrene, a pair of complementary mould chambers are each carried by a fixed machine platen (7), (Fig. 1, not shown), and a platen (4) displaceable on a pair of guide columns (3), via an articulated connection (9) to a power cylinder (10) also articulated to the machine frame, whereby the movable platen 4 may be locked by a device 12, against the moulding forces arising from the expansion, in a position with the mould chambers closed or may be retained, by a stop device 14, in a position with the mould chambers "cracked" apart to permit venting thereof as the mould is filled with polystyrene granules sucked or blown therein by injection air. The platen 4 is displaceable, via guides 8, on the guide columns 3 to each of which a device 12 is fixed by a clamping collar 13, and which device comprises a cylindrical bolt 15 provided with a flat inclined face 16 for locking engagement, with a corresponding face 24 on an element 23 which is attached to a guide 8, upon displacement transversely to the direction of guide displacement, via a lost motion connection 41, 25, by the piston 20 of a pneumatic or hydraulic power cylinder 19. The device 14 comprises an abutment surface 36 on the surface of the rod 28 (which may be adjustable) of a piston 27 which is hydraulically or pneumatically displaceable, within a cylinder 26 carried by the housing of device 12 to provide a stop for an abutment surface 37 of an adjustable spindle 30 carried by a guide 8. The appropriate ends of the cylinders 19 and 26 may be interconnected in respect of the supply of power fluid so that the movement into and out of respective locking and stopping engagement of bolt 15 and spindle 28 is synchronized. The piston 27 may alternatively be pneumatically actuated into the stopping position with the rod end of cylinder 26 being provided with vents 40, as shown, or being closed. In presses where the movable platen is connected to a displaceable lower cylinder, the devices 12 and 14 may also be connected thereto. The devices 12 and 14 may also be secured to any fixed part of the press, e.g. the press frame or the platen 7.
