Abstract

1,181,063. Bearings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 27 April, 1967 [4 Feb., 1966], No. 4892/66. Heading F2A. A "U"-shaped fluid bearing comprises an inner flexible wall 9, Fig. 3, an intermediate wall 14, which is spaced from the inner flexible wall 9 to form a plenum-chamber 13; and an outer wall 5, resilient spacing means 21 being provided between the outer wall 5 and the intermediate wall 14. The inner flexible wall 9 is secured to the outer wall 5 by spacers 11. The wall 14 is formed from a strip of rubber material having a cloth backing on its outer side and having pimples 15, Fig. 4, on its inner side. Marginal portions 17 of the rubber strip are provided without the pimples 15 to allow the rubber strip to be adhered to the inner flexible wall 9, the latter having holes 19 drilled therein. The outer wall 5 may be brass foil and the resilient spacing means 21 may be "open-cell" type synthetic plastics material. In use, pressurized fluid is supplied by means of a pipe 23 to the plenum-chamber 13, from where it escapes through the holes 19 in the inner flexible wall 9 and into a clearance provided between the latter and a shaft 1 mounted in the bearing. In an embodiment, a shaft 37 is supported by three circumferentially-spaced bearings 31, 33 and 35.
