Abstract

1,180,607. Space heating or cooling units. TRANTER MFG. Inc. 3 May, 1967 [16 May, 1966], No.20643/67. Headings F4S and F4V. A space heating or cooling panel unit including means for acoustic attenuation and for installation in a ceiling or related wall construction, comprises a plate structure 39 composed of a pair of generally flat plates 16, 18 disposed in face-to-face meeting engagement with one another, at least the upper plate 16 being stamped to form intercommunicating passages 20 i.e. transverse and longitudinal embossments 30, 31, 32 and 26, 28 respectively, when zones 34, 35, 36 are bonded against the lower facing plate 18, inlet and outlet fittings 22, 24 being brazed upright 90 degrees to the plane of plate 16 to allow heating or cooling fluids to circulate through said passages and thus heat or cool the room therebeneath, and a multiplicity of openings 41 extending through the plates 16, 18 in its non-passaged, brazed areas such that in one embodiment sound waves travelling through said openings can be attenuated in the mass of soundabsorbing material 43 or be reflected back into the material by a sound-reflecting pan unit 44. The longitudinally extending embossment 26 of the top plate 16 is provided with a restrictive formation 53 at its longitudinal midpoint, which considerably decreases the cross-sectional area of the passage 20 and assures parallel flow of the fluid through the transverse passageways. In alternative embodiments, the unit can be used in conjunction with force draught means (57, Fig. 6) located behind the plate assembly and/or with illuminating means, the rays passing through the acoustical holes to provide illumination of the space therebeneath. In this embodiment, the panel sheets may be translucent or transparent. In an assembly of the units forming a wall or ceiling, some only of the units may be utilized for heating or cooling purposes the remainder being dummy units simulating on their exposed face the configuration of the other plates. The plates are preferably supported by a grid (13) comprising elements of inverted 'T-shape cross-section (Figs. 5-7).
