A portion 38 of a label is in advance of a container 12 to which it is synchronously attached at 12c by a label feeding unit 7 on one side of the conveyer channel, as seen from the top, Fig. 1. This leading portion 38 of the label is then folded back on to the forwardly presented part of the container by the action of e.g. air jets or reciprocating brushes at 32. The unattached portion 38a of the label is then smoothed on to face 12b as the container moves in front of the smoothing means 27 at 14. Check rollers 30, 31 cause the container to rotate about a vertical axis through its centre at 15 and 18 respectively, thus enabling smoothing means 28 and 29 to complete the application of the wrap-round label so that there is an overlap. Alternatively, the conveyer belts may be made of spongy material to facilitate pivoting of the containers, the check rollers 30, 31 being replaced by non-driven smoothing rollers mounted at the ends of spring-biased articulated levers (Fig. 2), or by e.g. foam rubber guides or oppositely directed air jets. An air jet or suction system (not illustrated) may help support the label on the conveyer belt as it is being presented to the container by the suction roll 7. Spring blades projecting slightly into the container path may direct the containers into engagement with the check rollers; auxiliary conveyer belts may replace the guide rails at 35, 36 and 37; a pair of pincers may replace the air jets at 32.
