1,180,044. Continuous polymerization of betalactones. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 26 Aug., 1968 [11 Sept., 1967], No. 41319/67. Heading C3R. In the manufacture of polyesters by the bulk continuous polymerization of alphasubstituted beta-lactones in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, the polymerization is effected in the working space of a reciprocating pump or a gear pump (e.g. an external gear pump, an internal gear pump or a lobe pump). The feed to the pump may be a monomerpolymer mixture obtained by prepolymerization of the lactone at below 80 ‹C. and may also include a chain-transfer agent, a stabilizer, filler, pigment, dye, antioxidant, nucleating agent, antistatic agent or dyeability-improving compound. Examples describe the polymerization of pivalolactone using tributyl phosphine as the catalyst and, possibly, trinonylphenyl phosphite or p-chlorobenzene diazonium hexafluorophosphate as a stabilizer.
