Abstract
1,133,538. #-Lactones. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 16 Oct., 1967 [17 Oct., 1966], No. 47049/67. Heading C2C. #-Lactones are prepared by extracting an aqueous solution of a salt of the corresponding #-halogen carboxylic acid with a water-immiscible organic solvent with at least one additive which is soluble in the organic solvent and has an inhibitory effect on the polymerization of lactones. The additive is preferably an isocyanate, a trinitrophenol or an addition compound of a boron trihalide and an organic Lewis base. The process is most suitable for preparing α,α-dialkyl-#-propiolactone, wherein the two α-alkyl groups have not more than 4 C atoms. In the examples, sodium α,α-dimethyl chloropropionate in aqueous solution was extracted with CHCl 3 containing 2,4,6-trinitrophenol, BF 3 - triphenylphosphine, BF 3 - triphenylamine, BF 3 -etherate, α-monochloropropionic acid or 2,6-dinitrophenol to yield α,α- dimethyl-#-propiolactone.
