Impure cumene recovered either from the acid decomposition products of cumene hydroperoxide or from the exhaust gases of the oxidation of cumene to cumene hydroperoxide, and containing as impurities alpha-methylstyrene and/or oxygen-containing organic compounds, particularly carbonyls, is purified by hydrogenation in a bed of catalyst comprising cobalt and molybdenum on alumina or cobalt, nickel and molybdenum on alumina.
