[Also in Divisions D1 and D2] Compounds having the formula in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are alkyl groups containing an uninterrupted carbon chain of 12-22 carbon atoms, the carbon atom attached to the sulphur atom being regarded as the first member of the chain and the sum of the carbon atoms of both chains amounting to at least 25, R<SP>3</SP> is an alkyl group having 1-3 carbon atoms, X<SP>n#</SP> is an anion and n is an integer, are prepared by alkylation of the corresponding dialkyl sulphides, e.g. with dimethyl sulphate, the dialkyl sulphides having been prepared from linear olefins by reaction with hydrogen sulphide.
