Abstract

1458176 Sulphides CHIMOSA CHIMICA ORGANICA SpA 25 March 1975 [27 March 1974] 12309/75 Heading C2C Organic sulphides wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> each represents a straight or branched chain alkyl group containing from 1 to 30 carbon atoms and wherein n is 1, 2, 3 or 4, R and R<SP>1</SP> being the same or different, are prepared by reacting one or more alkyl halides containing the appropriate alkyl group or groups with an alkali metal sulphide or polysulphide in an aqueous medium in the presence of a catalyst which is an organic quaternary salt having the general formula where M is a pentavalent ion of P, N or another element of Group Va of the periodic table of the elements, and each of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 is an alkyl radical containing from 1 to 30 carbon atoms or an aralkyl radical, linked with a stable covalent bond to the M ion, and X- is a halide or hydroxide ion. Examples prepare di-n-octyl disulphide, di-n-dodecyl mono- and di-sulphides, di - n - octadecyl mono- and di - sulphides, and a mixture of di-n-octadecyl, di-n-dodecyl and n-octadecyl-n-dodecyl sulphides.
