Abstract

1,178,754. Non-woven fabric. BADISCHE ANILIN-& SODA-FARRIK A.G. 24 May, 1967 [25 May, 1966], No. 24138/67. Heading D1R. A non-woven fabric is bonded by treating it with an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of (a) 40-95% wt butadiene (b) 0-55% wt styrene and/or acrylonitrile (c) 0-5% wt of at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid (d) 1-7% wt of acrylamide, methacrylamide or a N-methylol derivative thereof (e) 0.1-3% wt of at least one copolymerisable compounds having at least two isolated double bonds. The percentages are by weight of the polymer. The aqueous dispersion can contain 30-60% wt of the copolymer. The copolymerisable compound (e) can be diesters of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid with diols, vinyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, divinyl or diallyl esters of dicarboxylic acids, allyl and methallyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, divinyl benzene or derivatives thereof and unsaturated amides of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids. The copolymers may contain copolymerised units of two or more of the monomers. The fibres of the non-woven fabric can be of cotton, wool, rayon, polyacrylonitrile, polyesters, polyamides, e.g. nylon 6 and 6,6 glass, asbestos or rook wool. Example 2 describes the fabric made of needled jute, shoddy and nylon 6. The aqueous dispersion can also contain condensation polymers, e.g. of formaldehyde and phenol, urea or melamine, or etherification products thereof, emulsifiers, e.g. ethenoxylated fatty alcohols which may have been sulphonated, alkyl or aryl sulphonates, protective colloids, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, additives such as surfactants, foaming or antifoaming agents, compounds which form acids on heating, water repellants, dyes, aging retardants, vulcanising agents and fillers. Specified additives are phosphonic acid, zinc oxide, magnesium chloride, ammonium nitrate, ammonium oxalate, zinc ethylphenyldithiocarbamate and maleic acid. The fabric can be sprayed or soaked with the aqueous dispersion and squeezed. The treated fabric can be dried and heated to 100-160‹C. The bonded non-woven fabric is resistant to washing and dry cleaning. The specification also discloses the impregnation of a rayon fibre wet with an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of butadiene, styrene and acrylamide, ammonium oxalate, aging retardant, with and without sulphur, zinc oxide and zinc ethylphenyldithiocarbamate.
