Abstract

[Also in Division G3] Apparatus for keeping the temperature of a room substantially within predetermined limits comprises both heating and cooling or ventilating means under the control of a single thermosensitive phial and is arranged so that the heating means is rendered operative when the room temperature falls below a predetermined minimum value and is not cut off until the temperature rises a predetermined amount (say 1‹ C.) above that value, whereas the cooling means is rendered effective when the room temperature rises above a predetermined maximum value and is not cut off until the temperature falls a predetermined amount (say 1‹ C.) below the maximum value, means being provided for delaying the operation of the cooling means for a predetermined time after the heating means have been cut off and correspondingly delaying the operation of the heating means for a predetermined time after the cooling means have been cut off. As shown, a phial 11 controls an electrical contact device 12 which, through a change-over device 13 including a voltage amplifier 17, operates a relay 15 of which the contacts 14 may connect the contact device 12 either to a motor 6 which opens the valve 7 of the heating means 2, or to a motor 10 which opens a cooling or ventilating member 3 depending upon the polarity of the error signal. The amplifier 17 is provided with a time delay circuit such as a condenser 18 charged by the error signal through a regulatable resistance 19. Fig. 3 shows a graph of room temperature against time, the predetermined minimum and maximum values of temperature being in this instance 15‹ and 25‹ C. Thus, the heating means is operative over the period A-C and the cooling means over the period D-F and neither over the periods C-D and F-G. In the limit, the predetermined maximum and minimum values may be the same, say 20‹ C.
