Abstract

1,177,945. Magnetic tests; gas analysis; photo-electric measuring systems. SERVOMEX CONTROLS Ltd. and C.R. EVANS. April 24, 1967 [May 23, 1966], No. 22906/ 66. Headings G1A and G1N. Apparatus for measuring the concentration of a paramagnetic component (e.g. oxygen or nitric oxide) in a gas, comprises two identical measuring cells 1, 4 through which the said gas and a reference gas of known paramagnetic component concentration are passed respectively, the outputs of the cells being compared in a ratio measuring device such as a self-balancing potentiometer. Each cell comprises a quartz dumb-bell 8 suspended in a non-uniform magnetic field. The dumb-bell is urged from its rest position by the presence of a paramagnetic gas, rotation of the dumb-bell being detected by a photo-electric arrangement which results in a current being applied to a wire frame 13 to restore the dumbbell to its rest position. Both cells are in the same temperature controlled thermal environment and both outlets 3, 6 are arranged close together so that the pressure in the two cells is equal.
