Abstract

1,177,801. Preparation of acrylonitrile copolymer spinning solutions. SNIA VISCOSA SOC. NAZIONALE INDUSTRIA APPLICAZIONI VISCOSA S.p.A. 18 Jan., 1967 [7 Feb., 1966], No. 2586/67. Heading C3P. A process for the industrial production of <SP>n</SP> spinnable solutions of copolymers of at least 85% by weight acrylonitrile and up to 15% by weight comonomer(s) comprises copolymerizing acrylonitrile and the eomonomer(s) dis. solved in dimethylformamide in the presence of a catalyst in one or more reactors at reduced pressure and at a progressively increased temperature, the reaction mixture being first brought to the boiling point, and then being maintained at the boiling point by controlling the pressure according to a programmed sequence, and by controlling the composition of the reaction mass by the programmed addition of further dimethylformamide and catalyst, thereby effecting polymerization under reflux conditions, and after polymerization the reacted material is transferred from the reactors) to a separate environment, wherein the said reacted material is distilled for virtually complete removal of unreacted monomer and of dimethylformamide which is in excess of that required as solvent for the spinning solution. Suitable comonomers include methyl methacrylate and sodium allylsulphonate. The polymerization is generally carried out to complete conversion of the comonomer(s) and to a preselected partial conversion of the acrylonitrile. Catalysts specified are lauryl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, allyl peroxide and azo isobutyronitrile. The solutions obtained by the process are used for the production of fibres and yarns. An installation for carrying out the process is described.
