1,177,637. Friction clutches and brakes; clutch-brake combinations ; fluid pressure brakes. P. C. PAYNE & CO. (KEYNSHAM) Ltd. 1 March, 1967 [4 March, 1966], No. 9654/66. Headings F2E, F2F and F2L. In a clutch-brake wherein an output disc 24 is axially movable between clutch engagement with a friction lining 22 fixed on an input disc 20 and braking engagement with a friction lining 38 fixed to a stationary housing 10, the disc 24 is moved in the declutching and braking direction and in the brake-releasing and clutching direction respectively by piston means 30 and 32, 33 slidable in annular channels 26, 28 in the housing 10 to which channels air pressure is directed through ports 34, 36. The piston means 30 comprises a double lip sealing ring acting directly on the disc 24, and, to prevent sealing ring wear when the clutch is engaged, rotatable rollers 44 carried by the disc 24 so as to protrude therefrom are provided to progressively separate the disc and sealing ring. The channel 28 is effectively split into two concentric channels, each containing double lip sealing rings 32, 33, the latter acting on the disc 24 via a thrust ring 40 and a thrust race 42.
