Abstract
1,177,396. Impact resistant polystyrene. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 4 May, 1967 [5 May, 1966], No. 20781/67. Heading C3G. Impact resistant polystyrene having improved heat distortion characteristics is produced by mixing polystyrene, prepared in the presence of polybutadiene, in an extruder at 180‹ to 270‹ C. with a copolymer of alpha-methylstyrene and styrene containing alpha-methyl styrene and styrene units in the weight ratio range of from 30 : 70 to 70 : 30, obtained by ionic polymerization, in such proportions that the final composition contains from 2 to 10% by weight of polybutadiene and from 1 to 20% of alpha-methyl styrene units, and cooling the composition to less than 70‹ C. in less than 60 seconds. In the examples, the melt of the polymers is extruded into a strand, which is cooled in water.
