[Also in Division B6] In Fig. 1 a machine suitable for use in ornamenting sheets of pliable material comprises base-plate 2, supporting a cutting pad 6. A block 10 heated by elements 18 is mounted for vertical sliding movement on guide rods 8. Secured to an underface of the heating blocks 10 is a matrix 14 having embedded therein blades 17 of a cutting member 16. The cutting member (Fig. 2, not shown) is divided by blades into first and second groups of segments, the blades surrounding the segments, the first group corresponding to the peripheral and central portions of the pattern to be applied to the surface of the sheet and the second group corresponding to an intermediate portion of the pattern. The first and second groups are hermetically sealed, one from the other, when in position on the material. Extending from the first group through the matrix 14 into communication with a cavity 28 in the block 10 is a plurality of bores 29. Extending through the block 10 from the cavity 28 to an outer face of the block is an air passage way 26. Secured to the block 10 and in communication with passageway 26 is an air line 27 which may be connected to a high pressure airline 32 or a vacuum line 34 according to the setting of a tap 31 of a manifold 30 connected to the line 27. The grain side of a leather upper is covered with paper masking tape P and the upper is placed on the cutting pad 6. The block 10 together with knife member 16 at 150‹ C. is lowered by piston 12 into engagement with the masking tape sufficiently to enable the knife member to cut the tape and to indent though not cut the leather. The knife member is maintained in contact with the leather upper for about three seconds to cause permanent deformation of the leather along the outlines of the pattern. The tap 31 is then moved to apply reduced pressure to air line 27 which is in communication with the first group of segments, thus stripping the masking tape from the peripheral and inner portions of the pattern. The knife member is then raised, the upper is removed and sprayed with a nitrocellulose colouring composition. The remainder of the masking tape is stripped from the upper.
