Abstract
1,176,661. Extracting selenium compounds; selenium dioxide. NORANDA MINES Ltd. 26 April, 1967 [5 May, 1966], No. 19891/66. Heading C1A. Selenium is recovered from refinery slime, e.g. copper refinery slime, by heating agglomerates thereof in an oxidizing atmosphere in a first reaction zone at below 400‹ C. to oxidize selenium and selenium compounds without causing further agglomeration, and heating at 600-800‹ C. in a second reaction zone to volatilize selenium dioxide. The agglomerates may be pellets or briquettes of diameter 0À25- 0À75 inch and need not incorporate a binder. The reaction may take place in a rotary kiln through which pellets are gradually forwarded. The oxidizing atmosphere may be air or oxygen and may flow continuously through both reaction zones; oxygen if used may be recirculated after scrubbing out selenium dioxide. The second zone may be at 700-750‹ C. Aciddigested slimes may be treated by the process after removal of lead, copper and tellurium.
