Abstract

1366712 Oxidizing metal ores SIMON ENG Ltd 3 Feb 1972 [23 Feb 1971] 5193/71 Heading C1A A method of oxidizing a mineral ore concentrate comprised of lead or zinc sulphides or mixtures thereof includes the steps of admixing with a binder, which may be water, and pelletizing the ore, feeding said pellets into a furnace which is supplied with combustion air, and recycling a portion of the waste gas from the furnace back into the furnace to control the concentration of sulphur dioxide in the furnace and hence control the rate of oxidation of the ore. Preferably the furnace is of the multihearth type where the pellets are introduced into the upper part of the furnace and preheated combustion air to the lower end. The apparatus used for carrying out the preferred process, whereby the combustion air is preheated by the recycle gases which are fed to a position part way up the furnace is claimed per se.
