Abstract

117,665. Liebowitz, B. July 23, 1917. Vibration-dampers ; connexions.-A spring suspension for motor and other vehicles comprises initially strained springs to which the oscillations of the body are transmitted in a reduced ratio varying inversely as the load, so that the variation of strain in the spring during working is small compared to the initial strain. Fig. 1 shows a suspension in which two initially compressed springs contained within casings 9, 10 are arranged between the axle and undercarriage so that the springs would be horizontal and still compressed if the device were under no load. Simple tension springs may be used instead of compression springs in casings. Fig. 4 shows a modification for use with axles connected to the frame by radius rods represented by the line R. The axle is connected by links 15, 16 to members 13, 14 which slide on alined rods 11, 12 carried by brackets on the chains. Initially-compressed springs 17, 18 are arranged between the members 13,. 14 and a yoke 19 capable of sliding on the rods 11, 12. This arrangement permits adjustment of the rod R. By fixing the yoke 19 the device may be used with a front axle. The links 15 are duplex to give lateral rigidity. All these forms have a vibration damper 20 which may consist of two disks 42. Fig. 7, formed respectively with arms 43, 44, the arm 44 being connected to the axle 3 by the lostmotion connexion shown. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which two initially strained leaf-springs 31, 32 are connected to the axle by links 33, 34 the eyes of which are slightly larger than their pivot pins so that for small displacements there is only rolling friction, but for larger displacements there is sliding friction available for damping oscillations.
