Abstract
21,442. Varty, R. Sept. 20. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Guiding vertical play; springs, arrangement of and mounting bodies. and undercarriages on. -Relates to vehicle suspension devices in which the body of the vehicle is supported by tension springs arranged transversely to the direction of motion of the body under the action of road shocks, and consists in connecting the axle to the spring suspension device in such a manner that each end of the axle pivots about the other, so that, when the axle tilts, as a result of a road shock on one wheel only, no strain is placed on the connexions between the axle and the spring suspension device. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the axle 1 is trunnioned at each end to a pair of sleeves 5 adapted to slide on vertical guides 4 in a frame 2 fixed to the chassis 3. Members 11 pivoted to the sleeves 5 carry the inner ends of tension springs 10, the outer ends of which are attached to members 20, which are connected by screws 15 to blocks 19 pivoted to the frame 2, the screws affording means for adjusting the tension of the springs. The pivot connexion between the axle and the frame 2 comprises trunnion pins 6 engaging eccentric holes in disks 8 rotatable in the sleeves 5; this device permits one end of the axle to move vertically with respect to the other end without straining the connexions. In a modification, the spring connexion between the sleeves 5 and frame 2 comprises a link pivoted to the sleeve 5 and to a cylinder telescoping into another cylinder pivoted to the frame 2, relative motion between the cylinders being opposed by an enclosed tension spring.
