[Also in Divisions C2; D1 and D2] A soft handle is imparted to fibrous materials, e.g. regenerated cellulose, cotton, synthetic polyamide and polyacrylonitrile yarns and paper, by treating them with an aqueous composition containing a phosphonium salt displaying antimicrobial activity and of the formula: in which m and n=1 or 2, A is -R, -CH 2 -O-R, -(CH 2 ) p -CO-NH-R or \(CH 2 ) n R / -CO-N in which R and R 1 are alkyl \ R 1 groups with 16-18 carbon atoms and p=1 or 2, B is the residue containing 1-7 carbon atoms of a halogenous quaternating agent, X is -CH 2 OH, -CH 2 CH 2 -CN, -CH 2 CH 2 - R 2 / CON or -CH 2 CH 2 -COOR 4 in which R 2 \ R 3 and R 3 are alkyl groups containing 1-4 carbon atoms, methylol groups or hydrogen atoms R 4 is an alkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms and Y is a halogen atom in an ionic bond, and then drying them. B may be an alkyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms, a benzyl group or one of the groups -CH 2 - CHOH-CH 2 OH, -CH 2 CH 2 OH or -CH 2 CONH 2 . The compositions may be applied by spraying, padding or immersion and may also contain a partially etherified hexamethylol melamine methyl ether, dimethoxymethylethylene urea and MgCl 2 6H 2 O.
