Means for adjusting a vehicle lap and diagonal seat belt of the kind comprising a single loop of webbing of which the ends are attached to anchorages and of which an intermediate part carries a tongue or buckle 10 adapted to be releasably engaged with a floor or tunnel-mounted fitting on the inner side of the seat, includes a locking plate 17 which is combined with the tongue or buckle 10 and which is angularly movable through a small angle relative to the tongue or buckle and is adapted to clamp or release, according to its position, a loop 27 of webbing of which one part 28 is continuous with the lap portion of the belt and the other 26 with the diagonal portion. As shown, the locking plate 17 comprises a pair of flat bars 18, 19 connected by side members 20, 21 which are inclined to the bars so that the latter lie in parallel planes spaced by a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the tongue 10. The bars define a slot 22 through which the tongue 10 can be passed to a position limited by abutments 16. In use, with the belt under tension the bar 19 is pulled against the bar 29 of the tongue, clamping the lap portion 28 and the bar 18 is pulled against the bar 15', clamping the diagonal portion 26; a pull on the appropriate side of the loop 27 tightens either portion of the belt and a pull on the outer end of the loop tightens both portions. The webbing is released by pushing the plate 17 at edges 23 against the abutments 16 which causes the plate to swing out of parallelism with the tongue and allows webbing to be drawn from the loop 27 to increase the effective length of either portion.
