Abstract

1,176,281. Magnetic structures. AMPEX CORP. 27 March, 1968 [3 April, 1967], No. 14775/68. Heading H1H. [Also in Division C7] A magnetic recording medium is produced by (a) vapour depositing a conductive layer of a non-ferromagnetic material on to a flexible plastics base member, (b) electrolytically depositing on the conductive layer a further layer of the same material, and (c) electrolytically depositing on said further layer a layer of magnetic material. The layers (a) and (b) may be of copper or nickel, the nickel in layer (b) being non-magnetic due to the inclusion of sodium hypophosphite in the bath for the layer, while the layer (c) is of 80 : 20 cobalt-nickel alloy or Co-Ni-Fe alloy and may be of high squareness. The plastics base member may be a cellulose acetate or polyester resin tape and may be coated by vacuum deposition with 1 to 2 Á Á inches of copper or nickel, electroplated with a further 20 to 40 Á inches of the same metal, and finally electroplated with 20 to 40 Á inches of the magnetic alloy.
