A self locking hooking device incorporates a hook member 11 having a hook 12 with an opening of sufficient size to permit insertion of a tube 15 or cylinder to which the device is to be hooked and locked, a jaw member 19 pivotally mounted to the hook member and biassed from a first position where it permits entry into and removal from the hook of the tube or cylinder, to a second position where it restricts entry into and removal from the hook of the tube or cylinder, a trigger member 21 slidable with respect to the jaw member between a retracted position where it permits pivotal movement of the jaw and trigger members together and a projecting position where it engages an abutment 28 which prevents pivotal movement of the jaw and trigger members together, the trigger member being biassed into its projecting position and in that position having a portion projecting beyond the jaw member so that on pressing the tube or cylinder into the hook the tube or cylinder deflects the trigger member to the retracted position thereby releasing the jaw member for pivotal movement to permit access of the tube or cylinder into the hook, the bias of the trigger member returning this to the projecting position to lock the jaw member in its second position thereby locking the tube or cylinder in the hook. In the construction shown there are two of said jaw members 19 which are spaced apart the trigger member being disposed between them; the trigger member is provided with slots 22 and the jaw members are provided with pins 23 which enter the slots to guide the trigger member in its sliding movement relative to the jaw members, the pins being formed by partially punching holes in the jaw members, the partially punched out portions providing the pins. The two jaw members and the trigger member are biassed by a spring 25 which engages a projection 26 of the trigger member. When the tube or cylinder has been removed projections 29 at the rear of the jaw member s19 maintain the jaw members in substantially the tube engaging positions by bearing against the shoulders 31 of the hook member 11. The trigger member is so disposed with respect to the jaw members that it is held away from the tube or cylinder so that it is not operated by material deposited on the surface of the tube or cylinder; the pivot pin 24 which secures the jaw members to the hook member is removable. The hook member is provided with a tubular shank 13 which engages in the end portion of a tube 14.
