Abstract

1,175,842. Locks. C. W. CHENEY & SON. 6 June, 1967 [16 June, 1966], No. 26925/66. Heading E2A. A lock comprises a pair of parts 10, 11 hinged together, one of which 10 is adapted to be attached to one of a pair of elements to be locked and the other of which 11 is arranged for pivotal movement during engagement and disengagement with an associated keeper (not shown) adapted to be attached to the other element, one of said parts being connected to a link 65, one end portion of the link having means 67 for forming a substantially irreversible connection with means 20, 22 on the other part whereby, prior to said connection being made, the parts are swingable apart beyond the normal maximum separated position permitted by the link when engaged, for the purpose of attachment of the lock to one of said elements, and subsequent making of said connection prevents hinging movements of the said parts beyond said maximum separated position. In the construction shown the means on the part 10 is a blade spring 22 and a pair of upstanding inturned lugs 20 disposed so that a slot 19 is formed between the adjacent ends of the lugs; an aperture 21 is provided in the member 10 below the slot 19; the blade spring 22 is connected to the part 10 by a rivet 23 and projects across the aperture 21 below the slot 19 between the lugs 20. The means 67 provided by the link 65 is a T-shaped end portion and by depressing the spring 21 the bar of the T-shaped end portion can be entered into the aperture 21 to be positioned below the slot 19 with the stem of the T-shaped end portion in the slot, the spring 22 springing back and preventing the link being removed from the slot. The other end portion of the link is also T shaped and is engaged with a slot 61 in a boss 60 of a liner plate which is a member of the part 11. The part 11 in addition to the liner plate includes a closure 38, a bolt 39 provided between the liner plate 37 and the closure 38, a cover plate 30 and a key selector plate located between the liner plate and the cover plate and journalled in a circular part of a keyhole in the cover plate. The liner plate 37 is provided with a pair of parallel lugs 42 which are apertured to receive a hinge pin 15 for hinging the part 11 to lugs 14 of the part 10. Threaded on the hinge pin 15 is a hairpin spring 50 which biasses the part 11 to a raised position relative to the part 10. The cover plate 30 is assembled over the assembly consisting of the parts 37 to 40 after the latter have been assembled by the hinge pin 15 to the part 10 and lugs 34, 35 are folded inwards to secure the cover plate to the assembly. The cover plate has a tongue folded upon itself to form a prong 55 which co-operates with a hook shaped lug on the keeper 13 to trap the latter in position between the parts 10 and 11. The bolt 39 is biassed by a spring (not shown) so that a portion projects through an aperture in the cover plate, the bolt also being provided with a centrally located bevelled nose 57 which projects across a slot 58 in the closure 38. The part 10 is provided with a lug 17 having an aperture 18 and when the part 11 is moved towards the part 10, the lug 17 enters the slot 58 and engages the bevelled nose 57 to retract the bolt against the bias of the spring and when the lug 17 has sufficiently entered the slot 58 the nose 57 snap engages with the aperture 18 to hold the part 11 in the fastening position against the part 10; release is effected by displacing the bolt inwardly of the aperture 34 to withdraw the nose 57 from the aperture 18. Located between the closure 38 and the liner plate 37 is a locking plate (not shown) which is turnable by the key to two alternative spring loaded positions in one of which displacement of the bolt 39 is impossible and in the other of which displacement of the bolt is possible.
