Abstract

1,176,140. Cleaning pipes. J. E. C. NESHAM. 5 June, 1967 [4 July, 1966], No. 29930/66. Heading F2N. A pipe cleaning device comprises a vibrator unit which is adapted for insertion into a pipe or tube and which comprises a body C and within the body a mass D<SP>1</SP> or D<SP>2</SP> axially reciprocable relative to the body, a pipe cleaning brush X extending forwardly from the vibrator relative to its direction of insertion, and an electrically-operated actuator acting directly, or indirectly, on the mass to impart continuous cyclical reciprocal motion thereto relative to the body. As shown, a shaft C whichis j journalled in end plugs Y in the cylindrical body C, is connected at one end by a flexible drive shaft G to an electric drive motor, not shown, and carries, at each side of a stop member B fast to the shaft, a cam member H<SP>1</SP> or H 2 which is restrained against rotational but not axial movement relative to the cylinder C and is connected by a sleeve T<SP>1</SP> or T 2 to the mass D<SP>1</SP> or D<SP>2</SP> axially but non-rotatably movably mounted upon the shaft C, the other end of the shaft being connected to the cleaning brush X. The cam members H<SP>1</SP> or H 2 co-operate with pins P<SP>1</SP>, P<SP>2</SP> fast to the shaft C and are urged towards the pins by compression springs A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>. On rotation of the drive shaft G the cam members H<SP>1</SP>, H 2 reciprocate as they ride up the cam profiles against the action of the compression springs A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>. The drive shaft G is enclosed by a flexible cover F. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a fixed central shaft S is connected between end plugs Y<SP>1</SP>, Y<SP>2</SP> secured by screws S<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>2</SP> to the cylindrical body C, a core E<SP>1</SP> or E<SP>2</SP> of solenoid windings F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP> being slidably mounted on the shaft S at each side of a central stop H and the shaft J of a pipe cleaning brush being screwed into the end plug Y<SP>2</SP>. A flexible cable (not shown), carries an interrupted direct current supply to the windings F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP> which are secured to the body C, the cores E<SP>1</SP>, E<SP>2</SP> being reciprocated alternately against the stop H to impart a vibratory motion to the brush shaft J.
