In a vehicle seat, resiliently mounted on a scissors linkage, a sliding connection 36, between the torsion bar 35 and a tube 33 carrying one pair of links 13<SP>1</SP>, 14<SP>1</SP> (which are integrally connected by a web portion 20) is movable, by means of a lead screw 40, to vary the effective length of the bar 35. The unstressed bar may be preformed with a twist, or the guide bars (37) for the slide connection 36 may be helical, instead of rectilinear. Alternative locations for the torsion bar assembly, at other connection points of the levers (13, 14) at 13<SP>1</SP>, 14<SP>1</SP> are stated to be equally possible.
