Abstract

Fluid governors.-One or more auxiliaries 5 of a main condensing engine or turbine 7 are driven by a non-condensing engine or turbine 9 up to a point at which its exhaust can be efficiently utilized for heating the feed-water and for other purposes, the remainder of the load of the auxiliaries being driven by an electromotor 8 connected to the main generator 6 driven by the engine 7. The auxiliary 5 shown in Fig. 2 is a direct current exciter for the main alternating current generator 6. The exhaust steam from the turbine 9 is led by pipes 12, 14 to a feed-water heater 13, Fig. 1. The admission of steam to the turbine 9 is regulated by a valve 22 controlled by a speed governor 25 and by a valve 23 connected to a device responsive to the temperature of the feed-water. This device may be a diaphragm 28 actuated by the pressure near the water-line 26 in the heater 13, Fig. 1, which pressure is stated to vary within limits with the temperature of the feed water, or the device shown in Fig. 3 may be employed comprising a movable abutment in a casing 33 connected to the valve 23 and subjected below to the pressure of a fluid in a tube 34 connected to a small tube 35 open at its lower end and sealed in a closed tube 36, which is exposed to the temperature of the feed-water. When the supply of exhaust steam exceeds that required for heating the feed-water, a vadve 23 in the steam supply pipe of the turbine is partially closed, and as soon as the speed falls below the synchronous speed of the motor 8, the latter comes into play and takes up the load the turbine 9 has dropped.
