Abstract
1,175,108. Writing inks. CHEMOLENE CO. Inc. 6 Sept., 1967, [9 Nov., 1966], No. 40713/67. Heading C4A. An ink for a capillary writing instrument comprises a solution of a dye in a liquid medium containing 10-100% by weight formamide, the ink having a viscosity of 0À6-200 centipoises at 20‹ C. and preferably a surface tension of 10-60 dynes/sq. cm. In one, preferred, embodiment, the dye is water-insoluble and the liquid medium comprises 20-90% by weight formamide, 1-80% of an organic polar solvent and 0-20% water. In an alternative embodiment, the dye is water-soluble and the liquid medium contains up to 90% by weight water. Suitable organic polar solvents are ethylene or popylene glycols, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, glycerine, benzyl alcohol, furfural and chlorophenol. Example II also contains methanol. The dye may be an azo, diazo, phthalocyanine, ferrocyanide or triaryl methane dye, and constitute 0À5-10% by weight of the total ink. Optionally, up to 0.5% by weight of an arylalkyl sulphonate or alkylphenolethylene oxide condensate wetting agent may be included in the ink. The ink is suitable for brush, fibre, felt, fountain or ball-point writing instruments, or for stamp pads.
