Abstract
1,175,005. Extruding laminated tubing. U.M.P. VENESTA Ltd. 3 Feb., 1967 [3 Feb., 1966], No. 4778/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] A method of producing a laminated plastics tube comprises continuously extruding a first tube from an extruder 1 over a cooled mandrel 2 having an external taper 11 decreasing in the direction of movement of the tube, " wetting " the external surface of the first tube when solidified by means of an electric corona discharge unit 4 and then continuously extruding a second tube 16 on to the first tube using a second extruder 6, the interior of the head thereof being connected by a pipe 17 to a vacuum source to obviate entrapment of air between the two layers. Air-rings 3, 7 respectively chill the first and second tubes as they emerge from their respective extruders. A layer of metal may be applied to the first tube by vacuum deposition or flame spraying after passage through the unit 4. The tubes may be of the same or different materials and specifically the first tube may be of polythene and the second tube may be of nylon, polythene or polypropylene. In a modification, the discharge unit 4 may be replaced with a gas/air flame. A water cooled mandrel may support the first tube during passage through the extruder 6.
