Abstract

1,174,904. Mechanical switches. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 3 May, 1967 [9 June, 1966], No. 25728/66. Heading H1N. In an ignition switch for a road vehicle in which a rotor 17, Fig. 2, first completes the ignition circuit and then completes the starter motor circuit a catch mechanism comprising a spring loaded feeler 55, Fig. 2, and a cam track 58 is arranged to prevent rotation to complete the starter motor circuit unless the rotor has been previously rotated back to the position at which both circuits are broken. The arrangement prevents inadvertent operation of the starter motor when the engine is running. The feeler 55 projects through a radial bore 57 in the rotor 17 and during switching on of the ignition is deflected axially by riding along ramp 61, Fig. 3, and when the starter circuit is closed drops over the enlarged end of the ramp. On return to the intermediate position the feeler 55 is deflected by the edge of the enlarged end of the ramp 61 and finally engages edge 62 which prevents return of the rotor 17 until it has been turned to the off position. Spring loaded ball 41 engaging detents 43 determines the " on ", " off " and " auxiliary circuit " positions, the ball 41 engaging ramp 47 during closure of the starter motor circuit. In this position the rotor is rotated against the action of a return coil spring 36, Fig. 1 (not shown) having one end engaged in a slot of the rotor 22 and the other end engageable with a stop 37 on the switch casing 11.
