Abstract

1324476 Starting I.C. engines BENDIX CORP 16 Aug 1971 [14 Sept 1970] 38382/71 Heading H2H [Also in Division H3] A control circuit for the starting system of an internal combustion engine comprises a mechanical switch 10 having "OFF", "ON" and "START" positions, a first electronic switch 30 for controlling current flow between the mechanical switch and a solenoid 5 which controls the energization of a starting motor, and a second electronic switch 20 for controlling the state of the first electronic switch, the arrangement being such that after an initial energization of the solenoid by placing the mechanical switch in the "START" position, the starting motor cannot be re-energized until the mechanical switch has been moved to its "OFF" position for a predetermined time. When the switch 10 is moved from its "ON" position in which a capacitor 19 is charged from a source 1 to its "START" position, transistors 32, 34 are turned on to enable energization of the solenoid 5. The switch 10 is then returned to its "ON" position so that the collapse of the magnetic field of the solenoid 5 switches on a thyristor 22 thereby turning off the transistors 32, 34. If a second attempt is now made to start the engine by returning the switch 10 to its "START" position the thyristor, since it is still conductive, prevents the switching on of the transistor 34 thus preventing the energization of the solenoid. However, if the switch 10 is placed in its "OFF" position the capacitor 19 discharges through the thyristor until the thyristor is turned off at the end of the predetermined time. The switch 30 is therefore returned to its "ON" state to enable the energization of the solenoid 5 when the switch 10 is placed in the "START" position. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 1,201,889.
