Abstract
1,174,658. Tobacco-smoke filters. CELANESE CORP. 18 April, 1967 [18 April, 1966], No.17708/67. Heading A2C. [Also in Division C3] Cigarette filters are made by agitating an aqueous dispersion of a resin which has a glass transition temperature below 50‹C., a fibrous material, a wetting agent and a thickening agent to form a foam and setting the foam by evaporation of its water content to yield a water-insoluble film, which is then used in strips to prepare the filter. The resin may be a homopolymer or copolymer e.g. polyvinyl acetate, polyvinylidene chloride, polvbutyl acryalte and curable acrylics. Cellulosic fibrous materials are suitable and wetting agents may be sodium lauryl sulphate, glucoside saponin or salts of long chain sulphonic acids. Preferred thickening agents are polyelectrolytes e.g. water-soluble salts of carboxymethyl cellulose, optionally added in amount by weight of from 0.2% - 5% of the weight of dry foam. A weight ratio of water to fibre of at least 10:1 and 0.2% - 1% of wetting agent based on the weight of water in the dispersion are suitable.
