Abstract

1,173,755. Continuous casting. CONCAST A.G. 5 Dec., 1966 [30 Dec., 1965], No. 54410/66. Heading B3F. In a continuous casting process means is provided for indicating the occurrence and nature of a fault in the process resulting from abnormal casting conditions, i.e. such conditions which are beyond the range of the normal process control means, causing a change in the level of the molten metal in the mould. The casting plant comprises a pouring vessel 1 from which metal is delivered into a feeding vessel 4 which in turn supplies metal at a controllable rate to a cooled curved mould 7. The casing which [emerges from the mould passes through cooling members 9 into a curved guide with rollers 10 and which incorporates further spray-cooling means 11. The continuous withdrawal of the casing 8 is effected by driven rollers 12 and the required lengths of ingot are subsequently cut off by a movable cutting means 17. A fault occurring during the casting operation, i.e. variation in the molten metal supply to the mould or a breakout of metal from the skin of the emerging casting, results in a change in level of the metal in the mould. The change in level produces output signals generated from level indicating means, associated with the mould which initiates through a controller 27 an alarm system and a control to counteract the fault. The level indicating means is in the form of radio-active sensers 45, 48 or electromagnetic wave-transmitting and detecting means 49 to 52 (see Fig. 3). A radio-active monitor 28 in communication with the controller 27 and in response to signals received effects control of a valve 5 for controlling the flow of metal from the vessel 4 to the mould. Further means in the form of a pyrometer 53 or magnetic coil 54 are provided to sense the flow of metal from the feeding vessel 4. Within the cooling region of the members 9 indicating means in the form of temperature-responsive elements 41 or fusible members 42 are provided to indicate a break out of the molten metal core. All the indicating means are interconnected so as to effect control of the speed of the withdrawal rolls and cutting device or the metal feed to the mould in dependence on the fault detected. A time functional relationship between the level indicators in the mould indicates by co-operation with the other indicating means the type of fault occurring. The quantity of molten metal in the feeding vessel is continuously determined by a weighing means 26 on which the vessel is carried. Circuit diagrams for the operation of the system under various fault conditions are shown.
