Abstract

A method for the directional control of a source of light in the form of one or more fluorescent tubes comprises positioning in the path of the light source a panel structure consisting of a facia panel having projections in the form of segments of a cylinder which extend parallel to the axis of said tube or tubes in combination with a support sheet having a plurality of light deflecting and transparent zones in the form of strips extending in the same direction as that of the projections, and adjusting in a direction parallel to the plane of the facia panel the relative positions of said zones and said projections, whereby light beams passing through the transparent zones will, on striking the projections, be deflected and be projected out of the structure in a concentrated manner and at a predetermined angle. The transparent zones 4 are provided on a transparent plastics member 5 which may lie adjacent the facia panel 1 having cylindrical segments 2 or be separated from it by a small air-gap. The transparent zones 4 are arranged in relation to corresponding segments 2 so that all light passing through one zone reaches only the corresponding projection. The upper surface of the light deflecting zones 3 should preferably be white or light-reflecting whilst the lower surface is black. This may be achieved by painting, metallizing, screen printing or roughening the surface of 5. The zones 3 may however be translucent rather than opaque and transmit light of one colour, e.g. blue. The transparent zone 4 may not be symmetrical with respect to the segment 2 but asymmetric thereby producing an asymmetric light distribution. A complete lamp housing is exemplified (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) wherein a plurality of fluorescent tubes (7) are enclosed in a housing (6) having a transparent member (5) adjacent panel 1 and thumb screws (9, 11) to adjust the horizontal and vertical setting of the transparent member.
