In a laundry press comprising lower intermediate and upper bucks 14, 20, 22 with complementary .perforated surfaces, the upper buck 22 is closed against the intermediate buck 20 only when it is tight against the lower buck 14, an additional high pressure is then applied to the bucks and steam is discharged from the intermediate buck, which is also separately heated, e.g. by steam, and a vacuum is applied to the upper and lower bucks, and when the high pressure is released, the upper buck is raised before the intermediate buck rises a small amount. The lower buck 14 is mounted on a table 13 to which levers 50, 52 connected to bucks 20, 22 are pivoted by a pin 18. Bucks 14, 22 each comprise enclosures 24, 39 with steam lines 26, 40 and vacuum lines 28, 44 and have respectively upper and lower perforations 30, 42 covered by padding 14, 22 and lower and upper asbestos covers 46. Buck 20 is of glossed metal and comprises a closed inner chamber connected to a steam line 33 and a perforated outer enclosure 34 connected to a steam line 37. A power cylinder 54 is pivoted to the press supporting frame 12 and to lever 50 which is also connected to frame 12 by spring 58 and also by levers. 64, 63 and damping mechanism 62. The lever 52 is similarly connected to frame 12 by power cylinder 68, tension springs 72 and damping means 76. Power cylinder 80 exerts a large force on the closed press. After pressing, the upper buck is lifted completely and the intermediate buck only partially by the foot 92 of cylinder 88 which engages lever 50 to move it against the action of cylinder 54. In operation, to press trousers one trouser leg is spread on buck 14 to which vacuum is applied by pressing footpedal FP2. Push buttons PB.1, PB.2 are pressed to operate the appropriate valves and to lower buck 20 on to buck 14 and the second leg is then dressed on buck 20 to which a vacuum is applied and buttons PB.1 and PB.2 can be released. The intermediate buck 20 can if required be released by pressing foot pedal FP.1. Push buttons PB.1 and PB.3 are then pressed and the upper buck 22 is lowered on to bucks 20 and 14 after which buttons PB-1, PB.3 can be released and foot pedal FP.1 is prevented from releasing buck 20. Buck 22 can be released by momentary pressure on button PB.4 and buck 20 will be lifted slightly at the same time. Some of the operations of the press may be controlled by a timer.
