Abstract

1,173,277. Coated metal surfaces. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 22 Feb., 1967 [26 Feb., 1966], No. 8563/66. Addition to 993,045. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] A method of bonding a sulphur vulcanizable synthetic rubber composition comprising an interpolymer of ethylene, an alpha-mono-olefin and one or more unsaturated compounds conferring unsaturation on the interpolymer to a surface of steel, brass or zinc, comprises mixing the interpolymer with sulphur and a cobalt salt in an amount such that the synthetic rubber composition has a metallic cobalt content of from 0.09% to 1.5% by weight based on the weight of the interpolymer and vulcanising the composition while it is in contact with the surface. The cobalt salt may be that of an organic or an inorganic acid. Specified are, cobalt naphthenate, linoleate, stearate, oleate, acetate or resonate and cobalt dichloride. The sulphur may be present in amount from 0.5 to 15 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the interpolymer. The composition may also include an accelerator, carbon black, an extender oil, a pigment, or a metal oxide or hydroxide. After application to the metal surface the composition may be vulcanized in the presence of steam under pressure at a temperature of from 150‹C. to 180‹C. Numerous suitable synthetic rubber interpolymers are specified. They may consist wholly of an interpolymer of ethylene, an alpha-mono-olefin of one or more unsaturated compounds which confer unsaturation on the interpolymer or, mixtures of such interpolymers with one or more other sulphur-vulcanizable polymers. Suitable unsaturated compounds are straight-chain and cyclic polyolefins, such as diolefines, such as butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, cyclopentadiene, a hexadiene, a heptadiene, a cyclo-octadiene, a dicyclopentadiene, a dycycloheptadiene, 1,4-endomethylene, hydrind-2,6-diene, a tricyclopentadiene and a tetracyclopentadiene.
