[Also in Division C3] A method of bonding a synthetic rubber composition comprising sulphur vulcanizable synthetic rubber, sulphur and an organic peroxide to a surface of steel, brass or zinc, comprises vulcanising the composition while it is in contact with a surface of steel, brass or zinc. The amount of sulphur may be from 0.1 to 25 parts by weight per hundred parts by weight of synthetic rubber in the composition, and the amount of organic peroxide may be from 0.1 to 10 parts by weight per hundred parts by weight of synthetic rubber. Numerous suitable organic peroxides are specified. A cobalt salt may also be incorporated in the synthetic rubber composition. The composition may also comprise carbon black, an extender oil, a pigment, a metal oxide or hydroxide or an accelerator. After application to the metal surface, the composition may be vulcanised in the presence of steam under pressure at a temperature of for example, from 150‹C to 180‹C. Suitable synthetic rubbers are polydienes such as polybutadiene or polyisoprene; copolymers. of dienes such as butadiene or isoprene with other polymerisable monomers such as styrene, alpha-methylstyrene, an acrylic ester, methylisopropenyl ketone, isobutylene, acrylonitrile or an unsaturated carboxylic acid, halogenated rubbers such as polychloroprene or fluoro rubbers; interpolymers of one or more mono olefins with a monomer which confers saturation on the interpolymer such as ethylene/propylene/dicyclopentadiene terpolymer; and sulphur-vulcanisable polyurethane rubbers.
