Abstract

Vulcanizable ethylene/a -olefin/diene terpolymer rubbers for bonding to zinc have incorporated therein 5 to 20 weight per cent of a cobalt salt of a carboxylic acid. The rubber may be a copolymer of ethylene, propylene and butadiene, isoprene, 2,3-dimethylbutadiene, 1,4-pentadiene, 2 - methyl - 1,4 - pentadiene, 1,5-hexadiene, 2 - methyl - 1,5 - hexadiene, 1,5-octadiene, dicyclopentadiene, 2-methylene-2,5-norbornene or 4,7,8,9 - tetrahydromethylindene. The terpolymer may be oil-extended. Specified cobalt salts are cobalt linoleate, stearate, oleate, acetate and naphthenate. The preferred vulcanizing agent is sulphur, and conventional accelerators, fillers, plasticizers and antioxidants may also be present. The compositions may be applied to zinc or zinc-plated steel, iron or aluminium articles, e.g. tyre cords or reinforcements for tubes, transmission belts or converyer belts, and simultaneously bonded and vulcanized. Examples describe the addition of cobalt naphthenate to compositions comprising mercaptobenzothiazole, tetramethyl thiuram disulphide, zinc oxide, carbon black, stearic acid, sulphur and ethylene/propylene/ cyclooctadiene terpolymers with and without extender oil, and various commercial ethylene terpolymer rubbers.
