Abstract

1,172,912. Paper tubes; rollers. COPE ENG. (RADCLIFFE) Ltd. 19 March, 1968 [3 Jan., 1967], No. 251/67. Headings F2P and F2U. A machine having a cylindrical mandrel and adapted for the manufacture of paper tube by a process wherein the paper is wound on to the mandrel, successive layers being superimposed on preceding layers, the layers being bonded together by adhesive, is characterized by the mandrel comprising a rotatable cylindrical tube having a plurality of angularly spaced axially extending slots through the wall, extending from one end to a position inwardly spaced from the other end, and a tapered plug member 14 movable from a first position where it is rotatable with the mandrel and holds it out to its full diameter to a second position where it is spaced for the mandrel end. The mandrel comprises a tube 10 provided with slits 11a, the portions between the slits being provided with end pieces 12a, 12b presenting faces 13a engaged by the plug 14 which is rotatably and swivelly mounted on the displaceable arm 15. When a paper tube has been wound on the mandrel the plug 14 is withdrawn to allow the sections of the tube 10 to move together, if necessary under the action of a spring, to allow the tube to be slid from the mandrel by movement of the ejector fork 16.
