Abstract

In a turret web-winding machine for multiply webs, an embossing roller 22 and an associated anvil roller 21 are incorporated to enable the plies of the web to be joined together by deformation over the limited length where the web is cut off and transferred to a new core. This prevents the outer plies unravelling when the innermost ply of the trailing end of the web is adhered to the completed web-roll (Fig. 1), and also ensures that all plies of the leading end of the web are attached to the new core 32. The web 17 passes from a supply roll 16, over a tension controlling dancer roller 19, a spreader roller 20, the anvil roller 21, a draw roller 23, a perforating roller 24, a guide roller 25, through slitter rollers 26, 27 and over a bed roller 28 having a cut-off knife 38. The embossing roller 22 is biased into contact with the anvil roller 21 by a spring 44, but during winding is held out of contact by a cam mechanism 53. For relatively small diameter web-rolls 10, the cam 52 may be arranged to rotate once for the length of web required to complete the roll 10, so that the follower roller 50 enters the recess 55 of the cam to emboss the web at the required position, for cut-off. However, for larger diameter web-rolls 10, it is preferable to have the cam 52 rotating a number of times. To prevent the roller 50 entering the recess 55 when not required, a longitudinally moving blocking bar 57 is provided which abuts extensions 56 of the pivoted arms 49 supporting the roller 50. The blocking bar 57 has notches (58, Fig. 4) which move under the extensions 56 when an air cylinder (59) moves the bar 57 longitudinally when the required length of web has been wound. This allows the roller 50 to enter the cam recess 55 so that the web is embossed.
