1,172,822. Straightening; rolling. REDMAN HEENAN INTERNATIONAL Ltd., and R. G. REES. 20 Jan., 1967 [20 Oct., 1965], No. 44475/65. Headings B3E and B3M. A method of straightening coiled strip comprises passing the strip between a pair of pressure rolls which apply a pressure to the strip across the full width of the strip and altering the magnitude of the pressure applied by one or both of the rolls over a portion of the width of the strip in accordance with the edge form of the strip and by such an extent that will effect the straightening of the coiled strip. Strip 10 from a drum 11 passes through guide means 15 which guide it to an edge-sensing device 16 from which it passes to pressure rolls 13, 14, one or both of which may be driven. The rolls 13, 14 are spring-urged together and additionally an hydraulic cylinder 17 is provided adjacent each end of the roll 13, controlled by a servo-valve 21 so that pressure may be exerted more on one side or the other of the strip 10. The valve 21 is controlled by a photo-electric sensing device 16. The device 16 may be replaced by a roller or cam engaging the edge of the strip and operating an electric. relay controlling a reversible electric motor operating screw jacks replacing the hydraulic cylinders 17. The photo-electric device 16 may be replaced by an ultrasonic device. The apparatus functions to stretch a concave edge of the strip thus to straighten it.
