In a resistance welding machine having a pair of electrode rollers over which a conductive wire is fed in succession, means are provided for moving the rollers from a spaced apart position to a proximate position and means are provided for taking up a running loop in the wire produced by stretching of the wire during welding. The running loop is collected when the electrode rollers are in the spaced apart position. A machine for the welding of tinned iron or aluminium plates comprises a fixed bracket 1 carrying a lower grooved electrode roller 15 and a pivoted arm 5 acted on by a cylinder and piston device 6, 8. The arm 5 carries the upper grooved electrode roller 17. A conductive wire 19 is fed from a reel 21 over a guide roller 23 to the electrode roller 15 and on leaving the roller 15 is guided over a driven roller 25, a spring tensioned roller 27 and rollers 35, 37 before passing over the electrode roller 17. From the roller 27 the wire passes over a driven roller 39 to a spring tensioned roller 41 and finally to a driven collecting reel 44. The rollers 25, 39 are provided with separate drives connected by a free wheel over-running clutch and the stretch produced during welding is taken up by the spring tensioned rollers 27, 41 the roller 39 driving slightly faster than the roller 25. The roller 39 drives faster when the electrode roller 17 is spaced from roller 15 to pull up the loop and engage the lever carrying the roller 27 against a stop 33. The pivoted arm 5 may have clamping devices to limit the deformation of the wire when it is lowered on to the work and a pair of profiling rollers may be provided adjacent the guide rollers 23 and/or 37 to form a desired profile on the wire. The wire 19 if fed through V-shaped grooves in the feed rollers 25, 37 may transport can bodies to be welded.
