Abstract
1,172,753. Adhesive coated foamed resin. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 31 July, 1968 [31 Aug., 1967], No. 39919/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Division B5] A wall or ceiling covering comprises a sheet of foamed aliphatic thermoplastic resin having a major surface coated with a dry non tacky film of synthetic adhesive that adheres to the foamed resin and can be made sticky by damping with water. The resin may be derived by polymerisation or copolymerisation of an ethylenically-unsaturated hydrocarbon monomer, e.g. an olefin such as ethylene, propylene or a butylene; nitrile such as acrylonitrile; vinyl or vinylidene chloride; vinyl acetate; or acrylate such as ethyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate. The adhesive may comprise at least a water-soluble adhesive component e.g. dextrin, casein, polyvinyl alcohol, or hydroxy ethylcellulose, and a water-insoluble resinous component e.g. natural or synthetic rubber, such as butadiene-styrene, poly butadiene; polymer or copolymer of a vinyl ether such as polyvinylether, or ester such as vinyl acetate or propionate, which may be partially hydrolysed. The surface of the foam may be treated with a curable polyester primer, hot air, flame, chlorine gas, sulphuric acid-dichromate solution, chromic acid solution, ultraviolet light, electronic bombardment, brush or corona discharge prior to the application of the adhesive. The surface of the foam remote from the adhesive may be covered with natural or synthetic fibre flock, embossed, printed, or faced with a layer of plastic film or paper. The foam resin sheet may have substantially closed-cell structure, the majority of the cells may have a diameter of from 0.003 to 0.01 inch, a thickness of from 0.003 to 0.09 inch, a density from 3 to 35 pounds per cubic foot, and a flexibility such that it can be bent back flat on itself without breaking or cracking.
