Abstract
1,172,710. Catalysts etc. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 17 July, 1967 [25 Aug., 1966], No. 32765/67. Heading B1E. [Also in Divisions Cl and C3] Catalysts comprising essentially pure crystalline #-TiCl 3 containing co-crystallised AlCl 3 are made by contacting TiCl 4 in a diluent mixture comprising at least 50% by volume of aliphatic hydrocarbons together with aromatic hydrocarbons at 100-200‹C with highly activated Al powder to form a reaction product and thereafter recovering the #-TiCl 3 product substantially free from other crystalline modifications. Organometallic compounds e.g. AlEt 3 , AlPr 3 , AlBu 3 and Al trCl or AlEt 2 I may be admixed with the AlEtrCl or Al t 2 I may be admixed with the cocrystallised #-TiCl 3 . AlCl 3 for catalytic purposes.
