Abstract
1,172,571. Refuse incinerators. DORR-OLIVER Inc. 19 Jan., 1967 [3 Feb., 1966], No. 2907/67. Heading F4B. A refuse incinerator having an outer refractory housing 24 and a stainless steel cylinder 23 is fed with sewage sludge under pressure through a nozzle 14, the combination of a compressed-air tube 21, motor 47 and end-plate 17 providing a rotating fan-shaped spray of sludge progressively spraying an entire circumferential zone of said cylinder 23. A tangential pipe 26 forces hot combustion gases around the steel cylinder 23 in the space 28 between the housing and the cylinder, heating said cylinder and igniting the dried sludge inside, until, in combination with preheated secondary air, the gas enters through opening 29 in the cylinder wall, to complete the combustion of the sludge. An exhaust outlet 37, connected to a cyclone, removes the combustion gases and the ash of the refuse, leaving only the oversize particles which disintegrate in the raceway formed by the annular projection 42 and the cylinder wall. The end walls of the housing are spaced apart by the length of the cylinder when cold plus the amount of thermal expansion of the cylinder when at combustion temperature, eliminating leakage of combustion gases when the cylinder is expanded. When the cylinder is cold, leakage is avoided by a spring 52 resiliently pressing the ends of the cylinder together. A pyrometer 56 can be used to record the temperature in space 28.
