The imagewise and overall exposures of a photographic material are determined by placing two light-sensitive probes in the image plane of a camera or enlarger, one at a highlight and one at a shadow position of the image, and adjusting the light falling thereon due to the two exposure means, to the desired values. The probes may be photo-electric cells converted to electricity measuring devices, or flexible light guides which are linked to one side of a photo-meter for comparison with a standard light source. When coloured filters are used with the photo-electric cells, a resistor in the cells' circuit is adjusted after insertion of the filters to a standard value on the electricity measuring means for each filter. The probes are placed on the base board or eased of an enlarger, or the ground glass screen of a camera. The flash exposure for the camera may be carried out by a light source within the bellows of the camera, or by a light source placed outside the optical field of the lens but the light from which may be reflected by white inside surfaces of the bellows.
